I'm sad that nobody's mentioned some of my most favourite little apps.
Notepad2 - open source (GPL), notepad.exe replacement, has syntax highlighting
Exact Audio Copy - secure audio ripper
WinRoll - neat little app for hiding windows away in the system tray, open source (GPL)

RocketDock is really good. It's like a Mac OSX dock, but unlike ObjectDock/others it's free.

I work as a computer technician, and assemble-reload around 30 systems a week. Here is a list of the programs that I put on all of them. These are all freeware, or non-beg non-spam/spyware programs:
AdAware: one of the best spyware scanners www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware
SpyBot: Another spyware scanner www.safer-networking.org
MicroSoft Defender: Only for 2000/XP, but a good TRS blocker http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx
AVG: The best free virus scanner I have found free.grisoft.com
Adobe Acrobat: Newest version comes with free graphics editing program www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
i-Speeder: Great little program, gives you the upload and download speeds of your network connection. Also allws you to link to an atomic clock to adjust the system clock. http://mainboard-drivers-and-utiliti...E-2000-XP.html
WinAmp: A simple and easy to use MP3 player. www.winamp.com
MusicMatch: The player is not that great, but is an easy to use CD ripper www.musicmatch.com
Yahoo Widgets: I do not install this on customer systems, but I do use this on my home system. The weather feature is a great snapshot of weather for the next few days. And since I have a dual monitor configuration, I keep a clock in my other monitor, since I am unable to see the clock when I am playing GW. I even set a timer, so I am not late for work anymore. widgets.yahoo.com

Heres a program that cleans basically your entire computer in around 5 seconds. Amazingly useful and very good at getting any infected file off your computer.
http://www.ccleaner.com/
(ran it then ran all my other virus scanners and nothing popped up, a week later i ran all my virus scanners then CCleaner and it found a bunch of infected files)

Station Ripper
Legal way to acquire music. It rips streams, automatically cutting the stream into individual files and seperating them categorically. This is an old beta, with significantly better functionality then the new beta, and roughly equivalent of the pay version. (ie, do not upgrade)
Net at my house is dead, so I can not seed it atm.
